what we leave behind

beneath the fading grass of carpeted
landscape.
sometimes pulled;
sometimes pushed,
are preferential pathways.
a walkers stalk.
locked down feet, the tussock, the same
choice,
to step off the paved space.
the paths that traverse by human design.

these are not the desire paths I've dug out with
my own feet
this meticulous design was there long before me,
I left my mark and my trace,
just as those who walked here before me.
we have trodden the grass, and smashed it until
it became dirt.
eat of us, tracing desire and mud.
each trampled root used to sketch
the shared walk.
